Repairing My Pretty Pink Avet Reel

In 2012, after I won the CIYC women’s fishing tournament, Gary bought me a new pink Avet reel.   We have a lot of rods and it’s instantly clear to anyone on the boat which one is mine.  When we take people out on the boat, we want them to have a good time, and there’s always more rods than people.  I have a tendency to let guests have the pole when a fish is biting because I get to fish all the time; but I tell them, “if it’s on the pink reel, it’s mine, and I AM taking it.”  So I was disappointed when my reel stopped working.  I couldn’t set the tension; when it was in the set position, it would still let the line out.

Here’s a youtube video that shows how to clean the reel.  Gary opened it up and and I cleaned the inside and put it back together, but it still wouldn’t work.  There are some really thin little washers in it and even being really careful, it was hard to tell where they came from.  Luckily Gary met Ben, who’s an Avet representative at a the Fred Hall Fishing Tackle & Boat Show last year.   It’s turns out that Ben lives near our area, and Gary was able to give him a call.

Ben came over and brought parts with him.  One of the first things he said is that some of the washers are actually concave/convex, so it does matter which way you put them back together.  That was one thing I hadn’t noticed when putting the reel back together.  He also helped us find the schematic which was really helpful.  Somehow we had lost one of the BellevilleWashers (part 5 on the schematic), but Ben had extras.  He told us to put a drop of oil under the dog (part 31) and said he really didn’t like putting grease on the drive shaft gear (part 28).

Remove phillips screws and put drop of oil under. Remove grease from gear.

Lately Gary has bought some lures that require casting.  Ben told us about M.C. (magnetic control) casting reels.  The MC makes the reel so that it won’t make a bird’s nest mess when your casting.  I haven’t done much casting, because I always mess it up.  Ben said that he always uses lures instead of bait.

Looks I might get another pink Avet reel.  My days of reading a book while fishing may be getting limited.
